How it works

Selected UW–Madison freshman applicants for the fall term are invited to participate in the Connections Program in lieu of direct freshman admission. In early spring, they receive a letter of invitation and a Program Agreement document from UW–Madison’s Office of Admissions. Students choosing to participate return the Program Agreement to the Director of the Connections Program, designating the college or university they want to attend. UW–Madison then works with the selected campus to admit the student for fall. Students attend freshman orientation and enroll for fall classes at the selected campus. Participants also are invited to attend a special orientation at UW–Madison where they receive a UW–Madison ID card and additional academic advising. When program requirements are fulfilled, the director of the Connections Program will facilitate the Connections students’ “transition” to UW–Madison as a junior.

How a student benefits

While enrolled at their transfer campus, UW–Madison Connections students receive a UW–Madison ID granting many of the same privileges as other UW–Madison students, including:

  • access to UW–Madison libraries;
  • access to recreational facilities and student organizations;
  • access to the student My UW–Madison Web portal, with its student news and student e-mail account;
  • ability to purchase tickets to UW–Madison athletic events at student rates;
  • and access to cultural and social events offered at
    the university.

Students also…

  • enjoy the solid academic foundation offered by the participating campuses with small classes and professors hired for their expertise in teaching.
  • enjoy student life at their freshman/sophomore campus, including participation in collegiate-level sports, student organizations, honor societies, and scholarship programs.
  • benefit from assigned academic advisors to ensure they pursue courses necessary for their intended majors.
  • earn a bachelor’s degree from UW–Madison, leaving with an excellent education and a resume with those four powerful words to last a lifetime: “University of Wisconsin–Madison.”

“I chose the UW–Madison Connections program because it was a way for me to get into UW–Madison, which I believe is one of the best public universities in the nation. By starting at UW Fox Valley, I received the benefit of small class sizes, individual attention from professors, and easier class participation. It was also much easier to get to know people at UW Fox.”

Krista Wagner, Connections student who started at UW–Fox Valley and completed a bachelor's degree in Accounting at UW–Madison.
